Liberty Park is a white level course with an average hole length of 250 feet. It has 19 holes. Liberty Park is a municipal city park in Spokane. The disc golf course integrates with the existing facilities and amenities such as the library, the baseball field, the playground, and aquatic center. The course winds its way around the 22 acre park and imaginatively offers players fun, scenic, and unique hole challenges adjacent to the park features. The course offers a relaxing, accessible, and fun experience for family recreation, beginners, as well as more seasoned disc golf players.
01 Opportunity
What started as a vision of Jeff Crum for a neighborhood park became a reality at the end of seven years of planning, implementation, design, and upkeep. With the unique features of the park, a beautiful medium length white course was designed. The course takes advantage of many features integrating with a cave, a unique rock plateau, a swimming pool, ball field, playground, and the winding Benn Burr Trail.
02 Challenge
Liberty Park has issues with transients and illegal activity in its history. What was once a prominent Spokane Park, was an ongoing challenge for the City Parks department and local law enforcement. Implementing a disc golf course took time and demonstration to win the support and approval of local officials. With the new participation of disc golf players, the course began to receive more attention.
03 Process
In 2017 Jeff Crum received approval to begin to implement a disc course. So initially the course was laid out informally with buckets for baskets and temporary markers to indicate tee areas. Jeff and ADD Disc Golf promoted the temporary park in the local disc golf community, and many began using it and that usage had a positive impact on the usage and safety of the park.
04 Outcomes
In 2022, ADD Disc Golf developed an official map that was produced and added on site at a kiosk. Jeff worked closely with the City Parks Department and officials connected with Liberty Park and advocated for the disc course to be part of the long term plan. In 2023 the City stepped in and helped implement official baskets and concrete tee pads with the advisory support of Jeff Crum and ADD Disc Golf.
